Easy Extra Thick Hot Pad Set Crochet Pattern

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

I was NOT loving Lion Brand Twisted Cotton Blend when I first started working with it. It was nubby and rough, and it was hard to crochet. I tried knitting with it. It just wasn't going to be the kind of placemat I had planned. I put it away multiple times and returned to other projects.

I tried a single crochet, holding the tension way too tight to close gaps in the fabric. Because of the nubby nature of the yarn, I found that keeping your tension loose helps the yarn glide across the hook better whether it's the nubby portion or the thin portion.

After experimenting with a looser tension and a different stitch, I found the perfect texture. Twisted Cotton is a bulky yarn which makes it ideal for a hot pad because it provides quite a layer between the hot dish and the table. Once I finished making one, I got a request for a longer one to go under baking sheets or casserole dishes. Four balls will make 2 small and 1 large hot pad, for a great gift set or just for you.

To make this extra thick hot pad, I sized down on hook size to keep the stitches tighter, and made two layers to provide plenty of protection from heat. The decorative border I had in mind made the perfect way to seam two layers together by triple crocheting the pieces together. Producing the two sides that make up the hot pad is easy and quick in half double crochet, and it makes it the perfect project on the go because it's small and easy.
